Core Rule

Just like addition, you must have a common denominator before subtracting. Subtract the top numerators and keep the bottom denominator untouched.

#1 #2 #3 Start with 5 Slices: 5 / 8 − Take Away 2 Slices: − 2 / 8 Remaining Slices: 3 / 8 5 − 2 = 3 (Keep common denominator 8)
Visual Fraction Subtraction: Start with 5/8, Subtract 2/8 (Crossed Out), Leaving Exactly 3/8

Subtraction Formula

ad − bd = a − bd

Example: 58 − 28 = 5 − 28 = 38.

Worked Example with Unlike Denominators: 5/6 – 1/4

  1. Find LCD: Multiples of 6 (6, 12…) and 4 (4, 8, 12…). The LCD is 12.
  2. Convert fractions: 5 × 26 × 2 = 1012 and 1 × 34 × 3 = 312.
  3. Subtract numerators: 10 − 312 = 712.
